Macular Degeneration

Some studies estimate that over 30% of our patients over 70 years of age suffer from this pathology. The disease slowly causes the most sensitive nerves in the back of our eyes to deteriorate. This causes a loss of detailed vision so that driving and reading become nearly impossible. A special branch of Optometry called low vision uses special magnification lenses to help patients retain a normal lifestyle. Current research indicates that certain precautions can be taken to lessen our chance of having Macular Degeneration.

Wearing sunglasses, hats, indoor lenses with ultra violet coatings, and anti-oxidant vitamins may help halt or slow progression. New photodynamic drugs (verteporfin) were approved in November 1999. Currently, laser treatment is the only other choice.
