Frames Designs

Today we have many different types of glasses to fit everyone’s active lifestyles. Primarily we have casual eyewear, dressy eyewear, sports eyewear, computer eyewear and specialty occupational eyewear. Facial shape and skin tone analysis are used for selecting the proper shape and color. Frame manufacturers can be broken into three groups: Designer frames, such as Giorgio Armani. Endorsement frames, such as Sophia Loren and Generic frames. I think we need to explain the difference between designer and endorsement frames. A designer frame is usually made of the best materials and is superbly engineered. An endorsement frame is usually no better than a generic frame but is capitalizing off the popularity of the celebrity. This has caused many people to be skeptical about buying better quality frames.

A very good rule of thumb we use in purchasing frames is to consider the country where the frame was produced. Industrial standards seem to be consistent with in a country. So, if you think a country makes high quality automobiles, then they likely make high quality frames. If the frame is made in Yugoslavia and you like Yugoslavia quality then the frame is okay for you. If the frame is made in Japan and you like Japanese quality then this is the frame for you. The differences in quality have to do with whether the nose pads are made of silicon or hard plastic, whether the screws and hinge assembly are made of zinc, chrome, or stainless steel. The frame itself is made of high quality metals, such as titanium, how often the electroplate is calibrated, polishing techniques, and how the coloring is applied. Another important aspect of frame quality for plastic frames is whether the frame was injected molded, or lathed. If a frame is injected molded, acids are added to the plastic so they flow into the molds better. These acids cause the plastic to fade and become brittle over time. Secondly, the molds are flat. Therefore, the memory of the frame is flat and not curved. This causes the frame to constantly slide and for lenses to come loose. Lathed cut frames on the other hand, retain their color, adjustment, and hold the lenses better.

The shape and size of the frame are also important in determining the thickness of the lenses. For minimum thickness you want to purchase a frame whose horizontal width matches the distance between your two pupils and is round. This is true regardless of what lens material you select.
